Here are 2 Interesting questions on Uber's cloud migration deal, Edition 49
Hello All,
I have been under the weather so could not ship the newsletter yesterday.
But, Here we go.
This week:

Is my car spying on me?
Our Cars are getting more and more sophisticated, but they are also becoming data hubs.
When you sign in, you âagreeâ to every contract-looking prompt. This opens us up to data collection that leads to vehicle forensics.
So, you my car may be spying on me.
It can be collecting data like:
Driving habits (often touted by insurance companies to help reduce your premiums)
Navigation history, text messages, emails, internet browsing, social feeds, and complete details of cell tower connections.
(phone connected via Bluetooth)
GPS Coordinates
Vehicle locking and unlocking state and historical information
Camera feeds
Can we avoid automotive surveillance?
5 data lies and some more
Starburst CEO Justin Borgman presented a keynote recently titled â5 data liesâ.
I found it to be sneaky good.
Here is my favorite point expanded -
Building a centralized data hub may work for a localized smaller company. but a nightmare for a multinational company.
It can get expensive and exhausting. Moving, syncing, securing, and replicating the data.
but, vendors make a ton of money doing it.
So, the data lies are apt.
This message bods well with their pitch.
But it is a great message.
AI Flies a Tactical aircraft. for 17 hrs
AI is capturing the imagination of the world.
The tech companies are fighting for domination.
Meanwhile - AI flew a tactical plane for 17 hrs.
Lockheed martinâs VISTA, a training airplane was flow by their latest AI software program for 17 hrs.
This marks new advances in the air and AI will play a big role in times to come.
Is it time to do away with Agile/Scrum?
Has it caused more damage than what it delivered? or has it reduced the damage and waste, when compared to Waterfall?
In my experience, Agile/Scrum doesn't fit every project.
But once organizations get on the bandwagon, they seldom listen.
True story.
Agile coaches become transformation agents.
and there can be no exceptions.
even when agile coaches admit that it is not working.
Organizations try to retrofit scrum,
and it fails.
Right from estimating a big problem down to delivering value, there are issues that are deferred or simply not addressed.
Here is a hilarious take on the agile manifesto I read and the writer's translations
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools. (Yeah, weâre gonna do things however we want).
Welcome changing requirements, even in late development. (We can also change our minds whenever).
Projects are built around motivated individuals, who should be trusted. (Leave us alone, take what you get).
Working software is the primary measure of progress. (The fact that we produced something, anything, is all that matters).
Simplicity â the art of maximizing the amount of work not done â is essential. (We are going to do as little as possible).
Best architectures, requirements, and designs emerge from self-organizing teams. (Donât tell us what to do).
Would you disagree?
2 surprises about Uber's large cloud migration contract
Uber made a buzz this week signing up large contracts for their cloud migration.
Here are two surprising points on the announcement.
They chose to go with GCP and OCI, rejection to go with AWS or Azure.
They announced a 7 deal.
here is why these are surprisingâŠ
Chosing GCP and OCI over the market leaders with a security focus
Uber had a significant number of security breaches last year.
So, I expected to see a focus on Cyber security.
Azure seems to be making the most investment in the Security ecosystem, followed by AWS.
so, a surprising choice.
A 7-year deal
what motivates a company to write a 7-year deal in today's time?
- Things change (Google didn't even see ChatGPT coming). 7 years is a lifetime.
- Could a deeper discount be at play? but still, 7 years!!! considering refresh cycles of hardware!!!
- could it be because GCP and OCI are making significant upfront investments? and hence getting a 7-year consumption commitment from Uber.
- use the news as guidance to shareholders. three of them are public companies and this could be a reason enough. but, will it matter much?
Ransomware attack & home Depot Canada in trouble
A ransomware attack hit the City of Oakland. It had a city-wide ops impact.
Home Depot Canada came under fire for sharing customer data with Meta. They were sending customer data from e-receipts to link customersâ Facebook profiles.
Since 2018.
Curious to see where this investigation goes.
how is home depot Canada handled for mishandling data privacy?
The largest DDOS attack Averted
Cloudflare detected and mitigated dozens of hyper volumetric DDOS attacks this weekend. This attack was 35% bigger than previously reported attacks of this kind in 2022.
71 Million requests per second coming via 30,000 IP Addresses !!!
That is it!
